South O’Brien golf teams claim wins over George-Little Rock

by Coach Kris Faust • The South O’Brien Girls and Boys Golf Teams beat George-Little Rock in a War Eagle Conference matchup at Primghar Golf Course on Tuesday, April 9. It was the first home meet of the season for the Wolverines, and the weather offered a fantastic opportunity for golf.
Sophomore Lindsey Einck shot a season-best to earn medalist honors for the third time in as many meets this season. She continues to make steady improvements. Sophomore Chloe Hustedt carded a personal best with a 60 for third place. With the help of freshman Raegan Plagge and junior Shayli Johnson, who are new to golf this season, the girls pulled out their second WEC win this season. We need to continue to improve if we want to be competitive in the WEC.
Team Scores: South O’Brien 250, GLR 250.
Medalist: Lindsey Einck (SO’) 51, Runner-up: Hadley Madsen (GLR) 55, 3rd: Chloe Hustedt (SO’) 60, 4th: Kami Gerken (GLR) 63.

Other SO’ scores: Raegan Plagge, 68, 5th; Shayli Johnson, 71, 7th.
The Wolverine boys squeaked out the win over GLR by just three strokes. Senior Aaron Funkhouser carded a personal best to tie for medalist honors with a 43. He took the runner-up medal after a handicap hole card playoff. It’s great to see Aaron have a breakout night. Senior David Bottjen shot 45 to take the third place medal. Bottjen continues to be a team leader. Sophomore Alex Griebel was back in the varsity lineup and proved himself with a 48 to take sixth place. Junior Jace Kleinwolterink added a 50 to round out the Wolverine cards for the team win. It’s great to get a WEC win. However, we need to be more consistent as we move through the course and stay mentally strong when we struggle.
Team Scores: South O’Brien 186, GLR 189.
Medalist: Spencer Spronk (GLR) 43, Runner up: Aaron Funkhouser (SO’) 43, 3rd: David Bottjen (SO’) 45, 4th: Matt Helkenn (GLR) 47.
