A pair of wrestlers from Sheldon/South O’Brien will be competing in Des Moines. Jarrett Roos and Josh Hofmann earned the trip with their performances at the Class 2A District 8 Wrestling Tournament held February 10 at Sioux Center. Wrestlers who finished either first or second at Districts advanced to the State Tournament which is being held February 14-17 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. The action in Class 2A is slated to begin Wednesday morning.
At the District Tourney, Roos captured first place at 190 pounds. The senior received a bye into the semifinal where he pinned Western Christian’s Christopher VandeBrake in just 51 seconds. Roos took a different path in the 1st Place Match, winning by technical fall over Brendan Lamfers of Sioux Center.
Hofmann, wrestling at 126 pounds, also got a bye into the semifinals. There he won by fall over Andrew Boersma of MOC-Floyd Valley in 1:07. The 1st Place Match saw the junior lose by technical fall to Sergeant Bluff-Luton’s Ethan Skoglund. The 2nd Place Match saw Hoffmann narrowly escape being pinned by Sioux Center’s Justin Romo. In the end, it was Hoffmann recording the pin to secure the bid to State.
This will be the fourth time that Roos has wrestled in the State Tournament. He finished fourth as a sophomore and was third last season. Hoffmann made a prior appearance in 2022.
Zack Brinkman, wrestling at 285 pounds, was seeking to return to State in this, his senior season. An opening loss by fall put him into the consolation semifinal where he pinned Mario Rangel of Sergeant Bluff-Luton. Brinkman also won the 3rd Place Match by fall over Spirit Lake Park’s Landon Poolman. He got his chance to wrestle back in a 2nd Place Match but was pinned by Brooks McFarland of Western Christian.
Orab 215-pounder Landon Sietstra also won a 3rd Place Match, pinning Sergeant Bluff-Luton’s Ayden Dather, but did not get the opportunity to wrestle back. He had won his opening match by decision over German Topete of MOC-Floyd Valley but then lost by fall to Western Christian’s Lucas Kooima. Sietstra earned a spot in the 3rd Place Match by pinning Gavin Remer of OABCIG.
Finishing in fourth place for Sheldon/South O’Brien were senior Cole Cox at 138 pounds and sophomore Mitchel Fischer at 165.
The Orabs totaled 91.5 points to place fifth as a team. Sergeant Bluff-Luton was the team champion. The Warriors finished with 206.5 points.
