Buzzer beater boosts Gehlen past Wolverine girls
Larissa Pohlen banked in a three-pointer at the buzzer to give Gehlen Catholic a 40-37 victory over South O’Brien January 26 at Paullina. A turnover by the Wolverines set the stage for the game-winner from the top of the key. South O’Brien had outscored the Jays 11-2 in the third period to take a 27-25 lead into what would be a very competitive final period. With the loss, the Wolverines fall to 2-6 in the War Eagle Conference and 3-14 overall.
Pohlen, with 12 points, was the game’s high scorer. The home team got 11 points from Marissa Ebel, nine from Chloe Hustedt, six from Addison Hedberg, four from Abby Woodall, three from Jaylah Jackson, two from Abby Nelson and one each from Lindsey Einck and Reese Farquhar. Ebel contributed two assists.
Each team made 14 baskets but Gehlen hit seven treys, compared to just one for the Wolverines. The Jays shot 24 percent and South O’Brien 30 percent. From the foul line Gehlen was 5-of-12 and the Wolverines 8-of-19.
There were rebounds aplenty with the visitors collecting 40 and South O’Brien 36. The top rebounders were Ebel with 11 and Farquhar with 10. Hustedt made four steals while Hedberg, Einck, Ebel and Nelson came away with two apiece. Ebel, Nelson and Woodall each blocked a shot. The Wolverines were guilty of 27 turnovers while Gehlen turned the ball over 25 times.
