Westerners top South O’Brien boys
War Eagle Conference leader Akron-Westfield moved to 5-0 in the loop with a 63-50 win over South O’Brien January 19 at Akron. The Wolverines were outscored 14-3 in the first quarter and 19-9 in the third. With the loss South O’Brien dipped to 5-2 in the conference.
The Wolverines were 15-of-39 from the floor (39 percent) with four three-pointers in 18 attempts. Akron-Westfield shot 40 percent with 18 baskets in 45 tries. The Westerners went 7-for-18 from beyond the arc. There were plenty of trips to the free throw line where South O’Brien was 16-of-18 and the home team 20-of-30.
For the visitors, Willie Conley scored 16 points, Derek Paulsen 12, Ben Woodall seven, David Bottjen six, Jaden Kreber five and Justice Frerk and Caden Wittrock two apiece. Bottjen was the assist leader with three. Jackson Marnach’s 21 points led Akron-Westfield.
South O’Brien committed 10 turnovers compared to 16 for the Westerners. Bottjen made five steals and blocked a pair of shots. He and Woodall each claimed six rebounds while Conley collected five caroms.
