Obituary – Kenneth “Butch” Meyer

Kenneth “Butch” Meyer, 76, of Mitchell, SD, died Wednesday, November 22, 2023 at his home. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, November 28, at Zion Lutheran Church in Mitchell. Burial will be at 11:00 AM Wednesday, November 29, at the South Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Sioux Falls, SD. Visitation will be Monday from 5-7:00 PM at Zion Lutheran Church with a 6:30 PM prayer service.
Kenneth Dwayne Meyer was born December 4, 1946, to Herbert and Leona (Smith) Meyer in Cherokee, IA. He attended and graduated from Paulina High School in Paulina, IA. After high school, Butch served in the US Navy from January 1964 to January 1969 with one year inactive and five years of active service. Butch then attended Western Iowa Tech for his Registered Nurse Degree, followed by Creighton in Omaha for his CRNA degree. 
Butch was united in marriage to Karen Marie Jalas on June 14, 1968, in Sutherland, IA. To this union, they welcomed four children into the world, Tamela, Scott, Ryan, and Lisa. Butch enjoyed spending time with his family, especially taking his grandchildren to the movies.
Early on Butch worked at the Canteen in Sioux City and was a mechanic at Ford Tractor in Sioux City. In 1978, Butch and Karen moved to Mitchell where he worked at the Methodist Hospital, and later transferred to St. Joeseph’s Hospital in 1987. Butch was a member of the Moose Lodge, Zion Lutheran Church for 45 years and served as an elder and usher there, and the VFW where he aided with military honors. 
Everything Butch did in life was for his family and the Lord.
Butch is survived by his wife, Karen of Mitchell; children, Tami (Roger) Hartley of Mitchell, Scott (Lynn) of Mitchell, Ryan (Maranda) of Sioux Falls, and Lisa (Chris) Pierson of Canistota; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and siblings, Norma (Marv) Schemmel of Sioux City, IA, Beverly Fisher of Chamberlain, Linda Phillips of Winner, and Gary (Mary) Meyer of Paulina, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, James Meyer; brother and sister-in-law, Darrell and Julie; and parents-in-law, Henry and Eleonora Jalas.
