Wolverines fall to Trinity Christian on the road
South O’Brien was unable to put it all together on enough plays to avoid a loss to Trinity Christian. Despite holding the lead late in the third set, the Wolverines were swept by Trinity 3-0 October 3 at Hull. Scores of the War Eagle Conference match were 25-20, 25-16 and 26-24. With the loss, South O’Brien slips to 3-6 in the conference and 6-14 on the season.
“Tough loss at Trinity Christian tonight,” remarked Wolverine head coach Amy Schmidt. “We didn’t play well enough to win. We were flat in the start of set one and missed too many serves. We weren’t moving to the ball to get decent passes on serve reception and free balls. Passes were in the net, sets were too tight and we just struggled to earn points. Set two and three were better from the standpoint that we had less service errors but didn’t make aggressive good choices at the net. Defensively we failed to stay low when playing defense and often got caught standing and watching the ball. We had some good touches on blocks but they didn’t drop for points. We just weren’t playing as confident as we have been the past two weeks. We have a long layoff now before our last regular season match (October 12 at George-Little Rock).”
Leading the attack were Reese Farquhar, who went 12-for-17 with seven kills, Taylor Wulf, who was 22-of-25 with six kills and Chloe Hustedt, who went 14-for-16 with five kills. Ashlynn Gunnerson’s assist total reached 20.
Abby Nelson and Hustedt each dug up 16 Tiger attacks with Gunnerson adding 13 digs, Farquhar 12 and Jinger Nieuwenhuis six. Wulf registered a solo block and assisted Marissa Ebel on another.
From the serving area Brooklyn Edwards was 13-of-13 with one ace, Farquhar went 12-for-13, Gunnerson was 11-of-13 with two aces and Marissa Ebel went 6-for-7 with two aces.
