Remsen St. Mary’s ends Wolverines’ season
On Wednesday, July 5 at Remsen the South O’Brien Softball Team saw their 2023 season come to an end in a 10-0 loss to 1A #6 ranked Remsen St. Mary’s in a Class 1A Region 1 quarterfinal.
The Hawks tallied 10 team hits compared to just three for the Wolverines. Reese Farquhar smacked a double and Jinger Nieuwenhuis and Marissa Ebel hit base hits, but there was never more than one hit in an inning to score a run. The Wolverines put the ball in play, but the Hawks played an error-free game in the field and their pitching by Marina Cronin was very good, mixing up the fastball with an off-speed pitch and changeup very effectively. South O’Brien only committed two errors on defense, but they were costly ones, along with six walks and a hit batter. RSM is the best hitting team we have faced this season and they just keep coming at you.
Shay Hatting pitched the first 3-1/3 innings and Brooklyn Edwards pitched the last 3-1/3 innings. They both threw well in the loss. Hatting gave up seven hits, eight runs (four earned), walked six and struck out three. Edwards gave up three hits, including a home run that ended the game, and gave up two earned runs.
The five seniors, Payton Farquhar, Shay Hatting, Maddie Johnson, Alyssa Van Beek and Karlee Warnke will be missed greatly. All five of them have improved their game immensely since entering the program as 8th graders and have gained a much greater knowledge of the game of softball.
The 2023 season ended with a 10-17 overall record and a 4-6 conference record and a sixth place finish in the War Eagle. Four Wolverine players were named as War Eagle All Conference selections. Jinger Nieuwenhuis and Maddie Johnson were named First Team, Payton Farquhar Second Team and Karlee Warnke Honorable Mention.
