Wolverines split doubleheader with Hawks
The South O’Brien Softball Team played Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn in a doubleheader on Monday, June 26 due to the first matchup being postponed from May 30 because of thunderstorms. In Game 1 the Wolverines would end up losing 7-5. In that game, which counted in the War Eagle Conference standings, the Hawks led the entire game except the top of the first inning when South O’Brien scored a run on an RBI single by Maddie Johnson. The Wolverines held the slim 1-0 lead, but the Hawks would go on to score four in the first inning, one in the third, and two in the fourth to take the 7-1 advantage. The Wolverines finally showed a little life when they scored one run in the fifth, one in the sixth and two more in the seventh to make the final score 7-5. The tying run was on first base, but South O’Brien just couldn’t really ever string many hits together for that big inning.
Shay Hatting threw five innings on the mound and took the loss. She gave up just four hits and seven runs of which only one was earned. She walked seven and struck out four. The Wolverines committed five errors in the field and the combination of walks and errors led to too many runs by the Hawks. As a team South O’Brien only tallied five hits. Johnson was the leading hitter with two singles and two RBI’s. Jinger Nieuwenhuis also had a pair of singles and her courtesy runner Kelsee Warnke scored a run. Karlee Warnke hit a double, had an RBI and scored two runs.

In Game 2 of the day the Hawks jumped out in front 2-0 in the first inning. Neither team scored in the second inning of play. In the third the Wolverines would put up three big runs off of three walks and singles from Johnson and Nieuwenhuis. The score favored South O’Brien 3-2 at this point. No one scored for either team in the fourth inning. In the top of the fifth the Hawks scored one run to tie the game up at 3-3. The Wolverines answered right back in the bottom of the fifth with a run. Nieuwenhuis had singled and later her courtesy Kelsee Warnke came home on an RBI single from Reese Farquhar. In the bottom of the sixth South O’Brien gave themselves a little breathing room by putting two more runs on the board to make it 6-3, which would end up being the final score of the game.
Brooklyn Edwards got the win on the mound going all seven innings. She scattered eight hits, gave up three runs (two earned), walked two and struck out eight. She was doing a good job of keeping it around the zone and the defense didn’t do too bad behind her with just three errors. Nieuwenhuis led in the hitting department with a couple singles, two RBI’s, and a run by her courtesy Kelsee Warnke. Johnson had a single, two RBI’s and a run. Reese Farquhar had an RBI single. We only had four hits, but we were very patient at the plate and drew nine walks, which helped to contribute to the win, along with eight stolen bases.
