Wolverines lose tight battle with HLP in bottom of seventh
The South O’Brien girls held a two run lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning against Harris-Lake Park, but could not get the third out for the win before the Wolves would pull off the upset 7-6 June 19 at Lake Park.
Both teams scored a run in the first inning. The Wolverines should have had at least one more run, as a ball hit over the fence by Karlee Warnke was ruled a ground rule double because the umpire thought the ball had bounced over the fence instead of clearing it. Even the opposing coach was signaling to the umpires that the hit was a legitimate home run. Later in the inning Warnke was thrown out at the plate. It was tough to overcome that call and get rolling again.
South O’Brien plated a pair of runs in the third to go up 3-1. In that inning Warnke had a base hit, stole second and moved to third on a sac bunt from Payton Farquhar. Maddie Johnson doubled to bring in Warnke. Johnson scored on a single by Reese Farquhar. In the fourth inning the Wolverines tacked on another run to go up 4-1 when Shay Hatting walked and her courtesy runner Avery Halverson came in on a double by Warnke. In the top of the fifth Jinger Nieuwenhuis hit a single, her courtesy Kelsee Warnke stole second, and then Reese Farquhar laid down a base hit bunt. Reese stole second on the next pitch and both runners scored on a single from Marissa Ebel.
The Wolves scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth off of one hit batter, two walks and a hit. The score was now 6-4 in favor of the Wolverines. Neither team scored in the sixth inning and the Wolverines did not score in the seventh either. In the bottom of the seventh with two outs, runners on second and third, and the Wolverines holding a slim 6-5 lead, an HLP batter hit a single to right field to score two runs and take the 7-6 win.
Shay Hatting pitched the first 4-2/3 innings of play and gave up two hits and three runs (two earned), walked three, had one hit-by-pitch and struck out three. Brooklyn Edwards came in for the last two innings and took the loss. She gave up six hits, four runs (three earned), walked one and struck out one. The Wolverines committed five errors in the field. South O’Brien definitely needed to hit the ball better all the way through the lineup. It just did not feel like we ever had a big break-out inning where we strung any hits together.
Karlee Warnke was the leading hitter going 3-for-4, with two doubles and a single. She scored a run and had two RBI’s. Reese Farquhar hit a pair of singles and scored a run. Ebel hit a single and recorded three RBI’s. Johnson had a double, a run and an RBI. Nieuwenhuis had a base hit.
