South O’Brien gets a split against Trinity Christian
Game 1
There were two outcomes when South O’Brien hosted Trinity Christian June 23 at Paullina. Trinity won 8-7 in the resumption of a game that had been suspended because of darkness May 25 at Hull. However, the Wolverines came back to win the nightcap, picking up a 5-4 War Eagle Conference victory.
The suspended game was resumed at the start of the 10th inning with South O’Brien at bat and the score tied 7-7. Gabe Moermond recorded a two-out hit but was stranded on base. In their half of the inning the Tigers led off with a walk and a steal of second. Following a pop out, a ground ball to short advanced the potential winning run to third. An errant pickoff attempt at third gave the game to Trinity.
The Tigers had taken a 2-0 lead in the first inning but South O’Brien tied the game in the third. The Wolverines then tallied five runs in the fifth to take a 7-2 lead. Trinity rallied with a five-spot of its own in the bottom of the seventh to pull even.
Dain Moermond was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI’s. Ben Woodall and Trevor Fiddelke each had two hits. Accounting for the other four hits were Boston Riedemann, Mitchell Enger, Brett Evans and Ryan Fuller.
Woodall was the starting pitcher. His six innings of work showed four earned runs on five hits and two walks. Woodall notched 12 strikeouts. Reliever Gabe Moermond took the loss.

Game 2
Enger blasted a pair of home runs to left field to power South O’Brien to victory in the regularly scheduled game. It was the first conference win for the Wolverines and just their second win overall.
The Tigers also used the long ball to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. In the third, a hit, two hit batters and a wild pitch allowed Trinity to go up 2-0. Further damage was avoided when catcher Brady Riedemann was able to retrieve a passed ball and get it back to pitcher Dain Moermond in time for him to tag out the Tiger baserunner before he reached home plate.
South O’Brien tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. Boston Riedemann hit his way on base and promptly stole second and third. He came home on Dain Moermond’s RBI groundout. Enger then launched a solo home run to pull the Wolverines even at 2-2.
Trinity nicked relief pitcher Woodall for a go-ahead run in the fifth inning. A walk and a ground ball out put a runner on second and he went to third when the ball got past the catcher. An errant throw to third allowed the Tigers to move back in front 3-2.
In the bottom of the sixth Boston Riedemann stroked a double and Moermond reached on an error. That set the stage for Enger who delivered a three-run dinger to lift South O’Brien into a 5-3 lead.
A walk came around to score for the Tigers in the seventh but, fittingly, Enger wrapped things up as the first baseman scooped up the ball Trinty put in play and stepped on the bag for the final out.
Enger and Boston Riedemann accounted for all of the Wolverines’ four hits.
Moermond’s four innings on the mound included two runs on two hits with five strikeouts, four walks and two hit batters. Only one of the runs was earned. Woodall tossed three innings of hitless ball, yielding two unearned runs. He struck out two batters and walked two.
