Knights use eight-run fifth to get past South O’Brien
Unity Christian broke open a one-run game with eight runs in the fifth inning and went on to down South O’Brien 11-1 in six innings June 15 at Paullina. The Wolverines trailed just 2-1 in the War Eagle Conference contest before Unity’s outburst.
The Knights scored a pair of runs in the first inning. It was the third inning when South O’Brien cut that lead in half. Boston Riedemann singled and was driven in by a base hit from Dain Moermond. Riedemann slid wide to elude the tag attempt of the Unity catcher, reaching out to touch the plate with his left hand.
Ben Woodall and Mitchell Enger each had two hits for the Wolverines. Camden Steven drew a base-on-balls.
Trevor Fiddelke made the pitching start but was relieved with two outs in that fifth inning. He yielded 10 runs on 13 hits but did strike out four Unity batters and didn’t walk any. Eight of the runs were earned. Gabe Moermond tossed the final inning-and-a-third. The one run allowed came on three hits. Moermond recorded no strikeouts or walks.
South O’Brien executed a double play when shortstop Ben Woodall fielded a ball and stepped on second base before throwing on to first. The Wolverines did, however, have five errors.
