Blackhawks put Wolverines away with a big sixth inning
On June 12 the Wolverines were down 5-0 to the Hinton Blackhawks, but came up with four runs in the third inning to close the gap to 5-4. In that inning Abby Nelson and Karlee Warnke both drew a walk and Payton Farquhar laid down a base hit bunt to load the bases. Jinger Nieuwenhuis then walked in a run. Maddie Johnson stepped to the plate and drilled a double to the fence to score three runs. Hinton scored three runs in the fourth and then five more runs in the sixth to go up 13-4. The Wolverines continued to fight by scoring three runs off of five base hits in the top of the seventh, but it would not be enough as they ended up settling for a 13-7 War Eagle Conference loss.
Shay Hatting started on the mound and went for 1-1/3 innings, while giving up four hits, three runs, walking two and striking out one. Brooklyn Edwards came in for the last 4-2/3 innings and gave up nine hits, 10 runs and walked four. The Blackhawks were hitting the ball hard and also took advantage of a very tight strike zone.
Johnson lead all hitters with a double, a single, and five RBI’s. Warnke and Payton Farquhar each recorded two hits and two runs. Nieuwenhuis hit a single, had two RBI’s and her courtesy runner Avery Halverson scored two times. Reese Farquhar contributed a base hit.
