The South O’Brien Softball team pounded out eight team hits in a 17-5 trouncing of West Sioux on Monday, June 5. West Sioux held a brief 1-0 lead after the first inning, but then the Wolverine bats caught fire and there was no looking back. They scored 11 runs in a huge second inning. The big hits of the inning were a double by Marissa Ebel and a home run by Alyssa Van Beek. The Wolverines also were aggressive on the base paths, while collecting six hits, six walks, and a hit batter all in the second inning.
West Sioux scored two runs in each of the third and fourth innings, but South O’Brien scored one in the third and then ended it by the 12 run rule in the fourth with five more runs. West Sioux was really struggling to throw strikes and South O’Brien was patient at the plate, but when they did come across with a strike we were hungry to hit it hard.
Shay Hatting pitched all four innings and got the win. She allowed three hits, five runs, walked three and struck out five. She pitched a really nice game for us and she also made a few defensive plays. Our defense did not have to make a whole lot of plays behind her. As a team we only had two defensive errors.
Van Beek lead the hitters with a home run and a single, two runs and five RBI’s. Ebel and Jinger Nieuwenhuis each ripped a double. Ebel scored three times and had an RBI. Nieuwenhuis had two RBI’s and her courtesy runner Avery Halverson scored twice. Also getting base hits were Payton Farquhar, Maddie Johnson, Reese Farquhar, and Lindsey Einck.
