South O’Brien traveled to Gehlen Catholic Wednesday, June 7 for a War Eagle Conference softball contest. It was a back and forth affair and tied at 6-6 through four innings of play. The Wolverines would go on the score five more runs to win 11-6. It was really our defense and pitching that buckled down to secure the win. We had three errors in the game, but they were all in the second inning. The rest of the game was clean.
Jinger Nieuwenhuis had a monster night at the plate! She went 4-for-5, including a home run and a double. She collected four RBI’s and scored a run. Alyssa Van Beek hit a double and a single, scored twice and had an RBI. Lindsey Einck and Karlee Warnke each hit a pair of singles, scored a run and had an RBI. Payton Farquhar also had a pair of singles and scored two runs. Abby Nelson, Maddie Johnson, and Reese Farquhar all hit one single.
We were behind 5-4 in the third inning when Brooklyn Edwards relieved Shay Hatting as the pitcher. Edwards would go on to get the win. Hatting gave up two hits and five runs, walked five and struck out four. Edwards gave up a hit, a run, walked one and struck out four. This was by far Edwards’ best pitching performance of the season. It was a great conference team win for us!
