Wolverines Squander 5-2 Lead in Sixth Inning at Trinity
By Coach Heather Struve
South O’Brien’s Softball team was up 5-2 after 5 ½ innings of play at Trinity Christian, but Trinity’s bats came alive in the bottom of the sixth for seven runs and they took the game by a score of 9-5. The Wolverines could not get any runs across the plate in the seventh. We were really in control the first five innings of play and then the Tigers just came out of nowhere with five hits, including a home run and they were also aided by two walks and a Wolverine error. All of our offense came from the top half of the order tonight. We need to get some offensive production from all nine batters in our lineup.
Leading the way on offense tonight was Marissa Ebel with a three-run homer. Payton Farquhar and Karlee Warnke each had a pair of singles and a run. Maddie Johnson rounded out the hitting with a base hit.
Shay Hatting really pitched a nice five innings, but got a little tired in the sixth frame. Her changeup was working wonderfully and keeping hitters off balance. She struck out four, walked two, gave up five hits and seven runs (two earned), while taking the loss. Brooklyn Edwards came in to relieve Hatting and in two innings gave up two runs (both earned), and struck out one.
