South O’Brien Captures Road Win Over George-Little Rock
South O’Brien won for the first time in three games, topping George-Little Rock 10-8 May 23 at George. The Wolverines, who withstood several comebacks by the home team, took the lead for good in the fifth inning.
Starting pitcher Trevor Fiddelke went 5-1/3 innings to pick up the win. He allowed five runs on five hits. Three of the runs were earned. Fiddelke struck out seven batters, walked five and hit one. Boston Riedemann tossed the final inning and two-thirds in relief. He yielded three runs (two earned) on one hit with one strikeout, four walks and one hit batter.
The visitors took a 1-0 lead in the first. Riedemann was hit by a pitch and stole second. Ben Woodall walked and a double steal put runners on second and third. Dain Moermond then drove in Riedemann with a sacrifice fly to deep left field.
In the second, South O’Brien drew six straight walks, plating two runs. Mitchell Enger then delivered a two-out, two run single. A Ryan Fuller RBI single in the fifth gave the Wolverines a 6-5 lead.
With two out in the sixth inning, Enger reached on an error and walks were issued to Camden Stevens and Fiddelke. Gabe Moermond was hit by a pitch, forcing in Enger. A wild pitch then allowed Stevens to score.
Leading 8-7, the Wolverines got a pair of insurance runs in the seventh. Fuller and Riedemann walked and advanced on a wild pitch. Dain Moermond’s infield hit brought home Fuller and an errant throw to first allowed Riedemann to come home.
The Mustangs put two runners on with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Riedemann came back from a 3-0 count to get a strikeout for the second out. A run came in on a wild pitch to trim the deficit to two. The batter then hit a high pop-up in foul ground which catcher Dain Moermond was able to put away in front of a cheering Wolverine dugout.
