Wolverine boys get a split in triangular with Trinity, Unity
South O’Brien, Unity Christian and Trinity Christian squared off in a triangular meet at Landsmeer Golf Course in Orange City on Monday, May 8, to wrap up the WEC regular season. The Wolverines took the dual from Trinity 177-186.
Three players tied for medalist honors at 41. After heading back out to the course for a playoff, Trinity’s Alec De Boer took the gold after two holes. South O’Brien sophomore Carter Halverson and junior David Bottjen earned 2nd and 3rd respectively. Said Wolverine coach Kris Faust, “This was the first meet all season we have sent kids back out to play it. It was tough for them to get back into the mental game and settle it.”
The 4th place medal went to sophomore Derek Paulsen from South O’Brien with a 46. Freshman Alex Griebel finished 7th with a 49, senior Dylan Strubbe carded a 51, and senior Keaton Sampson, a 52.
In the dual between Unity and South O’Brien, the Wolverines were blindsided by the home team. Unity took the dual carding a near-school record of 149. The Wolverines finished with a 177, just 7 strokes above their season best. Unity swept the medals with 37s from Titan Hulstein, Graden Van Essen, and Tait Groeneweg. The 4th place medal went to Unity’s Reece De Boom who shot a 38. “Our guys shot some great golf, but we struggled with some penalties and putting,” noted Faust. “It’s hard to compete with a team when four guys hit in the 30s. That needs to be our goal next season.” Top cards for the Wolverines were sophomore Carter Halverson and junior David Bottjen, who both shot 41 and tied for 5th. Sophomore Derek Paulsen finished in 8th with a 46, and freshman Alex Griebel finished 10th with a 49.
