Busy April for PFD within Paullina Fire District
The Paullina Fire Department was paged out for a lift assist with Paullina Ambulance on April 1, 2023.
On April 6 PFD responded to South O’Brien HS for a Pedestrian vs Car accident. On arrival, the victim was seated on the ground. Medical personnel stabilized the victim’s leg, and PFD assisted to load her into the ambulance and transport her to a local hospital for non-life-threatening treatment.
Many days of wind had rekindled smoldering embers at started an active fire again on April 8, at the City of Paullina tree dump. PFD extinguished the fire and went back in-service.
Later that same evening PFD was paged out to Mill Creek State Park for a fire that also had rekindled due to the weather. The fire had spread north to the north end of the property and stretched onto the property of the Paullina Municipal Airport. A tractor and disk were used to hold the fire out of the field so it also didn’t ignite. Granville fire department also assisted on this call.
A field and tractor fire at 5023 Redwing Ave brought out PFD on April 10. Upon arrival, PFD found a field with a strip of cornstalks on fire with a tractor also on fire. Brush units started extinguishing the cornstalks while the fire engine started to extinguish the tractor. Approximately 30 minutes into this call another page to a CRP burn that had gotten out of control. Granville and Hosper fire departments were directed to PFD’s second fire call. The field/tractor fire was extinguished, and PFD cleaned up and headed to the second fire call. Upon arrival found that the fire was under control and fire crews were just finishing up small area fires and hotspots.
The PFD crew was paged out April 13 to 5161 490th Street for a vehicle on fire in a field. Arriving PFD found a farmer had been alerted about the fire and headed there with a tractor and disk to help minimize the spread of the fire in the field. Crews went to work extinguishing the vehicle fire and put that out without further fire spread. Investigation showed that the vehicle had an electrical malfunction underneath the dash which ignited the fire. While returning to town from that call the O’Brien County Communications dispatcher contacted PFD by radio requesting response to another field fire at 500th St. & Oriole Ave. Arriving on-scene firefighters found a large amount of fire being wind-driven north across the field and up the ditches. Marcus, Meriden, Cleghorn, and Granville Fire were requested to assist with this fire, also several tractors and disks were called upon to assist in the fields to try to stop the spread of fire through the field. After controlling and extinguishing the fire that had gone through the fields and ditches we turned our focus on extinguishing the tree pile that had rekindled due to dry and windy conditions.
