South O’Brien High School Student Awarded Prestigious National Honor Society Scholarship
Paullina, IA – The National Honor Society (NHS) announced that Dain Moermond, a high school senior at South O’Brien and member of NHS, has been selected as an NHS Scholarship semifinalist.
Since 1946, more than $21 million in scholarships have been awarded to outstanding NHS senior members to support college access and student success. The scholarship program is supported by the parent organization of NHS, the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).
In the 100+ years since NHS was founded in 1921, members have been making a difference in their schools and communities, and the NHS Scholarship is NASSP’s way of recognizing the most exceptional of these student leaders. Recipients are chosen based on their demonstrated work to support the four pillars of NHS: scholarship, service, leadership, and character.
“Dain Moermond is an exemplary student that represents South O’Brien Community School District with the highest level of integrity in every facet of life,” says 7-12 Principal Denise Phillips. “He is committed to academic excellence, leads by example, is a team player, and willingly serves his school and community. Simply put, Dain is one that you can always count on to go above and beyond and to do the right thing.”
At South O’Brien, Moermond has earned varsity letters in football (two-time All-District, 2022 Punter of the Year), baseball (two-time All-Conference), basketball, and track and field. He is the Student Body President, NHS Vice President, and has served as President of FFA, earning Silver in State Agriscience. Moermond is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, participates in youth activities at Grace Lutheran Church in Primghar, and serves as a fireman on the Sutherland Fire Department. This fall, he plans to attend Iowa State University to study Actuarial Science.
