Winning Wolverine boys counter MMCRU surge
South O’Brien finished strongly to turn away MMCRU and collect a 52-45 victory January 31 at Marcus. The Royals held the lead briefly in the final period but the visitors took care of business down the stretch.
The Wolverines led for much of the game but MMCRU went in front 42-41 with five minutes remaining. A pair of free throws by Willie Conley and a three from Ben Woodall had the Wolverines on top 46-42 just a minute later. The margin grew as large as eight points late in the game. “We made some big shots, hit eight of nine free throws, and were able to defensive rebound the ball,” noted South O’Brien head coach Kiley Yates.
Conley led the team in scoring with 24 points. Boston Riedemann added 11 points, Hudson Oolman and David Bottjen seven apiece and Woodall three. Oolman contributed three assists while Woodall, Conley and Derek Paulsen each had two and Bottjen one.
South O’Brien shot 31.6 percent (18-of-57) and the Royals 31.1 percent (19-of-61). The teams were great at the charity stripe with the Wolverines going 10-for-12 overall and MMCRU 5-for-6. Not so much from three-point territory where South O’Brien was 6-of-32 and the Royals 2-of-23.
Doing the heavy lifting on the boards were Bottjen with 13 rebounds and Oolman with 11. Conley made six steals and Oolman blocked a shot. Each team was charged with 10 turnovers.
