MMCRU uses big second quarter to beat Wolverine girls
MMCRU took advantage of a lull in South O’Brien’s play to build a 23-point halftime lead and went on to down the Wolverines 58-26 January 31 at Marcus. The Royals bested the visitors 28-7 in the second quarter to build the big halftime edge.
“We played hard the first quarter, and then settled in a little too much in the second quarter to allow MMCRU to get a lead,” noted South O’Brien head coach Erica Zimmer. Some Wolverine players were unavailable for the game due to illness.
Alyssa Van Beek’s nine points led South O’Brien in scoring. Marissa Ebel and Samantha Wilbur each scored four points. Takara Conley and Chloe Hustedt tallied three points apiece with Addison Hedberg scoring two points and Abby Nelson one. Ebel, Wilbur and Reagan Draper each recorded an assist.
The Wolverines finished the game shooting 20 percent with nine buckets in 45 tries. They were 2-of-12 (Ebel and Conley) from three-point range and made six of their 16 free throws. The Royals found success on half of their 44 shots which included going 8-for-21 from beyond the arc. MMCRU also shot 50 percent from the line with six makes in 12 attempts.
South O’Brien grabbed 26 rebounds compared to 21 for the Royals. Wilbur snared eight caroms, Van Beek six and Ebel five. Nelson made a steal and Draper blocked a shot.
The turnover totals showed the Wolverines with three and MMCRU with seven.
