Hot start propels Gehlen past Wolverine boys
Gehlen Catholic’s offense was on display early in a 79-54 win over South O’Brien January 27 at Le Mars. The Jays led 24-15 after one quarter on the way to improving to 5-1 in the War Eagle Conference. The Wolverines dropped to 5-4 in the conference and 12-5 overall.
Double-figure scorers for South O’Brien were Willie Conley with 15 points, David Bottjen with 13 and Boston Riedemann with 11. Hudson Oolman scored five points, Ben Woodall three, Sawyer Honkomp, Reese Lundquist and Jaden Kreber two apiece and Logan Dau one. Woodall was the assists leader with two.
The Wolverines were 17-of-55 from the floor to shoot 31 percent. They made a quarter of their 24 three-point attempts and were 14-of-24 from the free throw line. South O’Brien committed 13 turnovers.
Conley was the team’s top rebounder with eight boards. Coming down with three rebounds apiece were Oolman, Honkomp, Bottjen and Dain Moermond. Riedemann stole the ball twice.
