Hot-shooting Wolverines top Hinton boys
South O’Brien reached its season-high for points as it hosted Hinton January 26 at Paullina. The Wolverines scored a decisive 78-37 victory over their guests in the War Eagle Conference match-up.
“We shot the ball very well and when we missed, we offensive rebounded the ball,” said South O’Brien head coach Kiley Yates. The Wolverines totaled 17 of those offensive boards.
There was more to South O’Brien’s game, however, than just offense. “We played excellent defense and held them to 18 points in the first half and continued to play hard in the second half to expand the lead,” noted the coach. “It was a great team victory over a talented team.”
The Wolverines got 23 points from Boston Riedemann, 21 from David Bottjen, 11 from Sawyer Honkomp, eight from Hudson Oolman, six from Ben Woodall, three from Dain Moermond and two each from Derek Paulsen, Gabe Moermond and Jaden Kreber. Oolman contributed five assists with Riedemann and Woodall adding four apiece.
The winners made half of their 58 attempts from the field. They were 9-of-30 from three-point range and 11-of-18 at the free throw line. A third of the Blackhawks’ 45 shots found the mark, including four of the 24 launched from long range. Hinton was 3-of-8 at the foul line.
Honkomp grabbed 10 rebounds with eight of those coming on the offensive glass. Bottjen pulled down eight rebounds and Oolman seven. Bottjen accounted for three of the Wolverines’ nine steals. Hinton was guilty of 15 turnovers while South O’Brien turned the ball over nine times.
