Dominant second quarter sparks Unity past Wolverine girls
Unity Christian shook off a slow start against South O’Brien to score 30 points in the second quarter. In the end, the visitors dispatched the Wolverines 63-12 to earn the War Eagle Conference win January 24 at Paullina.
South O’Brien was just 4-of-43 from the floor with one three-point basket in four tries. That trey came from Taja Conley. Abby Nelson matched those three points with a hoop and a free throw. Marissa Ebel and Alyssa Van Beek each had a bucket and Samantha Wilbur sank both of her free throws. The Wolverines were 3-of-7 at the line.
The top-ten rated Knights from Class 3A were 26-of-48 from the floor for 54 percent. They went 3-for-6 from beyond the arc 8-for-15 at the free throw line. Unity was paced by Gracie Schoonhoven who finished with 25 points and 11 rebounds. Eight of those boards came on the offensive end.
Van Beek pulled down seven rebounds, made three steals and blocked two shots. Ebel had three rebounds and two steals. Takara Conley also grabbed three caroms. The Wolverines committed 30 turnovers and the Knights half that many.
