Listless Wolverines fall to HMS girls
When South O’Brien traveled to Hartley January 17 to face off against Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, each team was seeking its first win of the season. The Wolverines fell behind by 14 after one quarter and it proved to be too deep of a hole to climb out of. HMS continued to put up points and eventually got its win by the score of 50-21.
“We had a cold night shooting and didn’t play with a lot of energy,” remarked South O’Brien head coach Erica Zimmer. The Wolverines made good on only six of their 44 shots to finish at 14 percent. They hit one three-point basket and struggled to an 8-for-22 night at the foul line.
Taja Conley and Alyssa Van Beek each tallied eight points. Marissa Ebel added three points and Samantha Wilbur two. Conley also had three assists and Ebel one.
The Hawks shot 34 percent from the field with 21 baskets (including a pair of treys) in 61 tries. They were 6-of-14 from line.
Leading rebounders for South O’Brien were Van Beek with 10, Reagan Draper with six, and Wilbur and Taja Conley with four apiece. Draper stole the ball four times and Abby Nelson came away with three thefts. Ashlyn Gimer and Conley each made two steals. The Wolverines, with 30 turnovers, committed twice as many as did the Hawks.
