Defense shines Wolverine’ win over Boyden-Hull
South O’Brien shut out Boyden-Hull in the first quarter and went on to beat the Comets 53-30 January 21 at Paullina. The win completed a 3-0 week for the Wolverines as they raised their season record to 11-3.
The Comets were limited to 23 percent shooting with 11 baskets in 47 tries. They launched 18 shots from three-point range and made two. South O’Brien was 18-of-49 from the field for 38 percent. That included going 5-for-17 from beyond the arc. From the free throw line the Wolverines were 12-of-18 and Boyden-Hull 6-of-10.
Willie Conley paced the South O’Brien offense with 20 points. David Bittjen was next with 11. Derek Paulsen added eight points, Hudson Oolman five, Dain Moermond four, Boston Riedemann three and Gabe Moermond two. A trio of Wolverines each contributed three assists. They were Sawyer Honkomp, Ben Woodall and Oolman.
South O’Brien turned the ball of just seven times. The visitors from the Siouxland Conference were guilty of 19 turnovers. Riedemann came away with three steals while Oolman and Conley each pilfered the ball twice.
Conley and Ridemann pulled down five rebounds apiece and Bottjen grabbed four. Oolman, Honkomp and Woodall each corralled three caroms. There were three blocked shots recorded – one each by Conley, Dain Moermond and Aaron Funkhouser.
