Strong Remsen St. Mary’s team beats Wolverine boys
Remsen St. Mary’s expanded a six-point halftime lead over South O’Brien to 20 at the end of the third quarter and went on to down the Wolverines 67-41. The game, played December 6 at Remsen, was the War Eagle Conference opener for each team.
“Remsen St. Mary’s is an outstanding team,” said South O’Brien head coach Kiley Yates. “They are better than last season when they went 25-1 and lost in the state semi-finals. We played a good first half, only down 29-23. They out-scored us 20-6 in the third quarter with a combination of outstanding defense and efficient offense. We missed some open shots and didn’t get enough second and third shots on the offensive board.”
The Wolverines were limited to 28 percent shooting (14-of-50) and were out-rebounded 39-15. The Hawks turned many of their 14 offensive rebounds into points. Hudson Oolman, Boston Riedemann and Dain Moermond each took down three rebounds for South O’Brien.
The Hawks were good on 25 of their 51 shots for 49 percent. Each team made six baskets from behind the three-point line. From the charity stripe the Wolverines were 7-of-8 and St. Mary’s 11-of-13. The turnover totals showed 10 for South O’Brien and 15 for the Hawks.
Seven Wolverine players scored in the game, led by Boston Riedemann with 13 points. Sawyer Honkomp added eight points, Ben Woodall six, Willy Conley five, Hudson Oolman four, Dain Moermond three and David Bottjen two. Honkomp and Oolman each notched three assists and Riedemann made three steals. Three was also the number of shots blocked by the Wolverines. They were recorded by Woodall, Bottjen and Moermond.
“Our kids played hard and competed for all 32 minutes,” noted Yates. “We have high character young men who will continue to improve throughout the season.”
