Wolverines Fall To Hinton Blackhawks
The Wolverines dropped the last regular season game of the year Friday. The Hinton Blackhawks came to Paullina and topped the Wolverines 26-6.
It was a game of big plays for the Blackhawks as a long pass at the beginning of the second quarter flipped the field and gave the Blackhawks good field position. With 9:47 to go in the 2nd quarter, the Blackhawks quarterback ran a quarterback sneak from 2 yards out to give them a 6-0 lead. The extra point kick was good and the Blackhawks led 7-0.
The Wolverines put a drive together after the ensuing kickoff. It was a 7 play 53 yard drive. The score came on a 4th down pass play. Jacob Vanlith threw to Boston Riedemann. Boston was able to avoid a couple tackles and scored with 7:51 to go in the 2nd quarter. The extra point kick sailed wide left and the Wolverines trailed 7-6.
The Blackhawks put their own drive together and scored with 23 seconds to go in the half. It was a 4th down play that we just missed on coverage. The extra point kick was good and the Blackhawks led 14-6 at halftime.
The second half the Wolverines were forced to punt on the opening drive. Hinton picks a big run up off the left side and ran 64 yards for the score. It looked like we had guys in position but we didn’t make the tackle. The extra point kick failed and the Blackhawks led 20-6 with 9:47 to go.
The Wolverine offense wasn’t able to get any consistency offensively in the second half. The Blackhawks put the final touchdown in on a 6 yard run with 2:02 to go in the game. The extra point kick failed and the Blackhawks led 26-6.
Justin Paulsen led the Wolverine rushers with 26 carries for 100 yards. Jacob VanLith was 5-8 passing for 65 yards and Justice Frerk was 6-12 for 44 yards. Defensively, Keaton Sampson had 9 tackles and Sawyer Honkomp and Kyan Kruse each had 6 tackles.
The Wolverines will travel to Moville on Friday to take on an undefeated Woodbury Central football team. This is the first game of the 2022 playoffs. It marks the 4th year in a row we have been in the playoffs. We need to continue to get more consistency on offense and eliminate big plays by the opponents.
