The South O’Brien School Board of Education met in regular session on Monday September 26. Following formalities, Pastor Don Meyer, Zion Lutheran Church in Paullina spoke to the board about junior high athletic practices. Members of the Ministerial Association, a loosely formed association of ministers, pastors and priests serving in the South O’Brien area, also attended. Meyer’s general message was to share concerns that although a compromise had been reached between the views of the ministerial association members and the newly adopted Wednesday practices, he felt it was a violation of a statewide arrangement reached years ago. The school board received Meyer’s remarks with thanks. No action was taken or response given.
Mrs. Mews provided the board with a comprehensive overview of the district’s Talented and Gifted (TAG) program for this year. She noted selection and activities each of the different grade levels. She explained how the different buildings were managed. Her report was followed by a submitted report from the athletic director and reports from both principals and the superintendent.
Approval for out of state travel for the Indy National Leadership Conference was given to FFA. Drug and alcohol testing was also approved. The three-year-old handbook was approved and Sue McCauley was selected as the IASB delegate.
Discussion of the junior/senior high school restroom remodeling was held. The board determined it is in the districts best interest to remove the restroom remodeling from a bigger project demolition/construction project to help reduce the cost. Approval for a $27,500 design fee was granted and the restroom remodel will be bid as a summer project.
