Wolverines stumble on Homecoming
The South O’Brien Wolverines took on a solid Lemars Gehlen Football team Friday night. They came in with only one loss on the season and were able to leave Paullina unscathed.
The final score showed the Wolverines coming up short 28-20. We had our chances and couldn’t eliminate some key mistakes.
The game started well for the host Wolverines. Sawyer Honkomp picked up his first interception of two on the night and the Wolverine offense was able to drive down the field. Eddie Millan got the 4 yard gain for the touchdown on a dive play but the extra point kick failed. The Wolverines led 6-0 with 8:08 to go in the first quarter.
Defensively, the Wolverines continue to play well but a blocked punt by the Jays gave the visitors great field position and they were able to score with 7:31 to go in the half. The exta point kick was good and the score was 7-6 Jays.
The Wolverine offense was able to pick up some good yards right before half but came away without any more points in the half.
The second half started with a Sawyer Honkomp 80 yard touchdown on the opening kick off of the half. The two point conversion was successful and the Wolverines led 14-7. Sawyer was had 4 kick returns for 154 yards on the night.
The Wolverine defense continued to play solid defense. We combined for 6 sacks on the night with Keaton Sampson having 4 of them. The Wolverine offense took over and had put a nice drive together. But a fumble on the 40 yard line after a long run stopped the drive.
Again the defense picked it up and got a nice stop, but the punt team had it’s second disaster of the evening and a bad snap put the ball on the 1 yard line and the Jays were able to punch it in on the first play and tied the score with 4:39 to go in the 3rd quarter.
The Jays then scored on a long pass play with 39 seconds to go in the third quarter. The extra point was good and the Wolverines trailed 21-14.
The Wolverine offense went to work and Justice Frerk was able to score on the qb sneak with 8:07 to go in the game. The Wolverines 2 point conversion failed and still trailed 21-20. Gehlen was able to score on one more long pass play with 4:50 to go in the game to make the final score 28-20.
Justin Paulsen had 38 carries for 221 yards rushing. Boston Riedemann had 3 catches for 28 yards. Keaton Sampson had 12 tackles and 4 sacks. Dylan Strubbe had 7 tackles and a sack.
The Wolverines travel to Akron next week for another District 1 game. We are gonna have to focus on our special teams and continue to improve as a team.
