Wolverines Pick Up District Win Over MMCRU 28-7
The South O’Brien Wolverines traveled to Marcus last Friday for a 7pm kick off against the MMCRU Royals. The Wolverines picked up the second district win of the season in a 28-7 victory.
The game started slow for the Wolverines. The Royals were able to drive down the field but came up short on downs. We were having some trouble stopping the run early but were able to make a stop on 4th down near the 20 yard line. Offensively, the Wolverines took over and on the 2nd play threw a “pick 6” to give MMCRU a touchdown with 5:57 to go in the 1st quarter. The extra point kick was good and the Wolverines trailed 7-0.
The Wolverine offense did a better job of controlling the ball and scored on a big play of our own. Justice Frerk threw a pass to Hudson Oolmann. Hudson went 62 yards for the score but the two point conversion attempt failed. So with 3:40 to go in the 1st quarter, the Wolverines still trailed 7-6.
The Wolverine defense stepped it up the rest of the night and didn’t allow any scoring by the Royals. The Royals only mustered 107 yards of offense on the night. We did a really good job of stopping the run game only allowing 41 yards rushing on 26 attempts.
The Wolverines scored a touchdown each quarter on the night. The 2nd quarter touchdown was a 1 yard run by Justice Frerk with 8:24 to go in the quarter. He also ran a qb sneak on the two point conversion to put the Wolverines up 14-7.
The third quarter score came on another qb sneak by Justice Frerk. The two point conversion was a pass from Justice to Boston Riedemann and put the Wolverines up 22-7 with 7:22 to go in the third quarter.
The final score in the 4th quarter came on a 20 yard pass to Boston Riedemann from Justice Frerk. With 4:13 to go in the game the extra point kick sailed wide left. The final score being 28-7.
Justin Paulsen led our rushers with 21 carries for 73 yards and a pass reception on a hook and ladder play that went 27 yards. Hudson Oolmann led our receivers with 2 catches for 67 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, Boston Riedemann and Cole Cox had interceptions. Dylan Strubbe and Dain Moermond had sacks and Keaton Sampson and Hudson Oolmann led our tacklers with 6 each.
Next week is Homecoming at South O’Brien. Lemars Gehlen comes to town and we are going to have to be ready for their team speed. Offensively, we need to continue to get better in our running game.
