South O’Brien Falls to Sheldon
The Wolverines dropped a tough one to the visiting Sheldon Orabs Friday. The final score showed the Orabs up 17-0. This was the second of two non-district football games and drops the Wolverines to 1-1 on the season.
The first quarter proved to be a back and forth affair as both defenses kept anyone from scoring. The Wolverines did have a nice drive in the first quarter but stalled out in the redzone by running out of downs.
Sheldon managed to put to together a 20 play drive in the second quarter. A couple of 4th down plays kept the drive alive and Sheldon was able to score with 2:40 to go in the quarter on a 1 yard run. The extra point kick was good and put the Orabs ahead 7-0.
The 3rd quarter looked very similar to the 1st quarter with neither offense able to get rolling. A late 3rd quarter interception thrown by the Wolverines did set the Orabs up for a 24 yard field goal with 11:59 to go in the 4th quarter.
The final score for the Orabs came on a 24 yard touchdown run with 1:53 to go in the game. It was set up by a pass interference call that gave the Orabs a 1st down. Defensively, we got used to Sheldon running the ball every down and didn’t read the pass quick enough. The extra point kick was good and the score became 17-0.
Offensively, the Wolverines had trouble picking up the linebacker blitzes in the A gaps. This made it very difficult to run plays. Grant Wagner finished the night with 9 carries for 32 yards. Boston Riedemann led the Wolverine receivers with 3 catches for 33 yards. Jacob VanLith was 5-10 for 42 yards and 2 interceptions.
The Wolverines travel to HMS next Friday for opening District 1 play with the Hawks. We really need to clean up things up front offensively. They are a very run dominant team and we are going to have improve on our blocking and tackling.
