Summer Projects At The Elementary Building
A real point of pride for the South O’Brien Elementary Building for the 2022-23 school year is the number of students gained. Mr. Morran explained that the facility will see more than 30 new faces – not counting the 3- and 4-year-old preschools. He estimates the building will experience a population increase of more than 20 full time students. Both preschool grades are full. The 4-year-old preschool is full with 20 students. Bus transportation is available. Students living in Paullina students attend 5 mornings each week. Sutherland 4-year-old preschool students attend in the afternoon. The 3-year-old preschool is full with 15 students. The 3-year-old preschool has a tuition of $150 per month. Bus transportation for them is available. To enroll at student must be 3 by September 1.
Four projects were completed at the South O’Brien Elementary Building over the summer. The total cost for all upgrade projects reached approximately $300,000. The Guidance Counselor’s office got some much needed additional space as well as paint and floor covering. A wall that once divided the room into two rooms was removed and can now accommodate good work space for Mrs, Negus as well as about a students. Small groups in this area are perfect.
The media center upgrades made a huge difference. New floor covering really changes the feel of the library/media center. New shelving for the books are more accessible for students. Shelf units have been arranged to create storage space. New furniture and material were added and the new interactive boards, an upgrade from smart boards. They are much more convenient.
The 3-year-old preschool space was once 2 computer labs. The wall was removed for more space and “a clone” of the 4-year-old preschool was constructed. A bathroom for toddlers was also installed right in the classroom. A second exit needed to be installed for safety reasons. Some parts of the room are carpeted, some is tile for those really fun but messy projects. Cubbies were added and some age-appropriate furniture and toys. The room came in at a cost of approximately $30,000.
A small-ish classroom on the second floor was enlarged by removing a wall. The classroom went from maybe 15 or 16 students to a comfortable 22 or 23 students.
