South O’Brien opened the volleyball season with three games at the Spencer Early Bird Volleyball Tournament August 23 at Spencer. They lost all three outings, falling 2-1 to Okoboji and 2-0 to both Spencer and Manson Northwest Webster.
The Wolverines won the opening set against the Pioneers 21-18 but lost the second 21-12 and the decider 15-12. Tatiana Conley led in kills with four. Whitney Einck totaled 12 assists. She and Marissa Ebel came up with seven digs apiece. Ebel and Karlee Warnke each made a block. Brooklyn Edwards recorded three ace serves as did Ebel.
The host Tigers took the first set against South O’Brien 21-9. The Wolverines made things closer in the second, eventually falling 21-16. Maddie Johnson supplied a quarter of the team’s 12 kills and served 10 of 11 with four aces. Alyssa Van Beek had the lone block. Edwards led in digs with six and Einck in assists with nine.
The Wolverines lost to the Cougars by identical 21-17 set scores. Again four kills was the high individual mark, this time turned in by Van Beek. Einck assisted on nine of the team’s 16 kills. Ebel dug up seven Cougar attacks and Van Beek and Johnson notched one block apiece. Edwards was 6-of-6 serving while Johnson fired three aces.
