Covey Church Annual Service

Each year when late summer or early fall comes around the Sutherland Methodist Church holds a service in the rural church. Covey Church is the first wood structure church built in O’Brien County. It was once oblieterated, except for its floor by a cyclone and rebuilt by the residents of the area. It also was given a facelift by the residents of the area for appearance sake and protection. Covey Church is a storied marker in O’Brien County. The well preserved interior features original pews, flooring and the bell. PIctures and posters of the early settlers who made the church building a reality adorn the wall. PIctures of weddings held at Covey Church since its congregation moved on adorn the walls. Despite its age and remote location, Covey Church is a beloved site.
The service on Sunday brought approximately 25 faithful out for worship and an old fashioned picnic. Part of the grounds are designed to accommodate travelers with rest. It features a shelter and picnic tables. There is a circular drive and a primitive outhouse.
The uplifting service given by Reverend David Morris provided stories from the bible that gave lessons on the grace and power of humility. Reverend Morris sprinkled humor throughout his service.
Elaine Leonard played the piano. Jim DeBoom explained the newly placed organ in the church. He explained that the last owner, a Sheldon resident, is a descendant of one of the original members of Covey Church. The organ was donated back to where it began.
