Cherokee wins close battle
On Thursday June, 30th South O’Brien traveled to Cherokee for a non-conference softball game. The Braves were ahead 2-1 after the first inning. In the second the Wolverines tied it up at 2-2. In the top of the third South O’Brien pushed four runs across the plate to go up 6-2. The big hit of the inning was a double by Grace Fuhrman.
In the bottom of the third Cherokee tallied two runs to keep it close at 6-4. Neither team scored in the fourth inning. In the fifth the Wolverines got two more runs to go up 8-4, with the only hit that inning another double from Fuhrman.
Things looked like they were well in hand, but Cherokee scored four times to tie up the score at 8-8 off of five hits and a hit batter in the bottom of the fifth inning. South O’Brien got a run in the sixth when Kenna Bauer tripled and scored on a single from Abby Schreck to go ahead 9-8. Cherokee got two runs of their own off of two hits and two costly errors in the sixth to win the game 10-9, as South O’Brien did not score in the seventh inning.
Brooklyn Edwards threw the first three innings and gave up five hits and four runs (one earned) while striking out one. Fuhrman pitched the last three innings to take the loss by giving up seven hits and six runs (four earned), walking one and striking out two. Fuhrman led all hitters with a pair of doubles, an RBI, a run and a run by her courtesy, Abby Nelson. Schreck hit a double and a single and had an RBI. Bauer tripled and scored a run. Getting singles were Payton Farquhar, Jinger Nieuwenhuis, Alyssa Van Beek and Maddie Johnson.
