HMS overcomes late South O’Brien rally
The South O’Brien girls found themselves behind Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn 3-0 after six innings of play June 27 at Hartley. With one out in the top of the seventh Grace Fuhrman reached base on an error and was replaced by her courtesy runner, Avery Halverson. Annika Jenness hit a single to put runners on first and second. A wild pitch moved them to second and third. Karlee Warnke then ripped a two-RBI single to left field.
Warnke made it to second on a passed ball and stole third. The next batter struck out to give up the second out, with the Wolverines still down 2-3. While Maddie Johnson was at bat with a couple of strikes on her, Warnke stole home to tie the game at 3-3. Johnson later walked and was replaced by Reese Farquhar on the bases. Farquhar moved to second when Kenna Bauer reached first on a dropped third strike. Farquhar later scored on a passed ball to go ahead 4-3. The next batter was retired to end the top of the seventh.
In the bottom of the seventh HMS had their first batter ground out to the pitcher. Then they hit a single, a double and drew an intentional walk to load the bases. Their next batter hit a walk-off double to end the game with HMS winning 5-4. It was a tough loss for sure, but the Wolverines showed their grit by clawing back in the seventh inning.
Warnke had the big hit of the night with the two run single. Jinger Nieuwenhuis and Fuhrman each ripped doubles. Jenness and Abby Schreck each hit a single in the losing effort. Fuhrman threw a very nice game and unfortunately had to take the loss. She allowed seven hits and five earned runs, walked three and struck out nine.
