Unity Christian scores big in the late innings to top Wolverines
Unity Christian scored nine runs in the final three innings to secure a 14-5 War Eagle Conference victory over South O’Brien June 23 at Paullina. The Wolverines had trailed only 5-3 after scoring a run in the third but ultimately fell to 0-9 in the conference and 1-15 overall.
Following a four-run first by the Knights, South O’Brien came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Boston Riedemann opened the half inning with a double down the left field line. He took third on Kester Grimm’s comebacker to the pitcher and scored on a throwing error. Pete Bottjen walked and stole second. He scored when Unity misplayed a ball hit by Dain Moermond.
The Wolverines drew withing 5-3 in the bottom of the fourth. Brock Riedemann and Trevor Fiddelke hit back-to-back singles Ben Woodall drew a walk to load the bases. Cole Tjossem followed with a base hit to bring home pinch Brady Riedemann, who was pinch running for Brock.
The final two South O’Brien runs came in the seventh. Tjossem walked and Boston Riedemann was hit by a pitch. An error allowed Tjossem to score and Riedemann to move to third. Moermond then hit a sacrifice fly to right with Riedemann scoring.
Moermond was on the hill to start the game and absorbed the loss. He tossed 5-2/3 innings which included nine runs (seven earned) on 11 hits with three strikeouts, three walks and one hit batter. He received relief from Grimm who went the final 1-1/3 innings. Grimm allowed five earned runs on four hits, the big blow being a grand slam in the seventh. He walked three batters. The Wolverines committed five errors.
