South O’Brien girls pick up pair of wins at Westwood Tourney
South O’Brien traveled to Sloan on Saturday, June 25 and captured a couple of victories at the Westwood Softball Tournament.
The Wolverines started their day with a 10-4 win over Lawton-Bronson. The game was tied at 4-apiece through three innings and then South O’Brien broke open a big lead with five runs in the fourth inning. Getting hits that inning were Grace Fuhrman, Karlee Warnke and Kenna Bauer. We also drew three walks in the fourth frame to help our cause and put pressure on L-B.
Fuhrman led all hitters with a pair of singles, two runs and an RBI. Maddie Johnson and Abby Schreck each ripped a double and Schreck had two runs and an RBI. Hitting base hits were Jinger Nieuwenhuis, Warnke, and Bauer.
Brooklyn Edwards started on the mound and got the win. She threw three innings, walked four and struck out one, while giving up four runs (two earned). Fuhrman threw the last two innings and gave up no runs off of one hit, one walk and three strikeouts. The game was called after five innings due to the time limit at tournaments. Our defense had a great game, only committing one error.

In the second game of the day the Wolverines faced Westwood. The game was close and tied up at 4-4 through 3-1/2 innings of play. In the bottom of the fourth South O’Brien once again broke the game open with a 3 run inning to take a 7-4 lead. They added to their total with a run in the fifth to make it 8-4. The game once again ended with the time limit.
The bats were on fire the entire game as South O’Brien had 12 total hits. Leading the way were Fuhrman and Bauer with a double and a single each. Fuhrman also had two RBI’s and a run scored by her courtesy Avery Halverson. Bauer had an RBI. Marissa Ebel and Johnson each had a pair of singles. Ebel had two RBI’s and a run scored and Johnson had an RBI and a run scored by her pinch runner Halverson. Also hitting singles were Nieuwenhuis, Farquhar, and Jenness.
Fuhrman threw the entire game and gave up six hits, four earned runs, walked two and struck out five in five innings. Her change up was really working the past couple days and she seems much more comfortable using it. It really helps to keep the batters off balance.
This was a great week for the Wolverines, as they won four out of their five games. South O’Brien’s overall record stands at 9-13 and their conference record is 4-6. There is only four days left of the regular season as the post season will start on July 1. South O’Brien will get to host Trinity Christian on July 1 at 7:00 p.m. at Swanson Sports Complex. The winner takes on Remsen St. Mary’s Wed., July 6 at 7:00 p.m. at Remsen.
