Six-run second boosts MMCRU past Wolverines
MMCRU broke the scoring ice with six runs in the second inning on the way to a 13-3 win against South O’Brien in five innings June 22 at Paullina. The Royals had just seven hits but were aided by five walks, four hit batters and four Wolverine errors.
The visitors added a seventh run in the top of the third before the Wolverines struck for three runs. After Ben Woodall was retired on an outstanding catch in right field, Cole Tjossem drew a walk. He stole second and advanced to third on an error. Boston Riedemann drove in Tjossem with an infield single. He swiped second base and got to third on a passed ball. With two outs Pete Bottjen was hit by a pitch. Bottjen bluffed a steal and drew a throw to second, allowing Boston to score from third. Bottjen then did steal second. Brock Riedemann hit a ball to the shortstop and was safe on an errant throw. That allowed Bottjen to score the third run.
MMCRU responded with three runs in fourth and an equal number in the fifth. Boston Riedemann’s infield single was the only hit recorded by the Wolverines. Kester Grimm and Woodall each coaxed a walk while Boston Riedemann was hit by a pitch.
Bottjen was given the ball to start the game and he went four innings, allowing 10 runs on seven hits. Half of the runs were earned. Bottjen walked four batters, struck out two and hit one. Grimm threw the fifth inning, giving up no hits but three unearned runs. He hit three batters as well as walking one and striking out one.
