Stephen Alrik Sundquist was born on March 1, 1941, to Elmer and Katherine Stephen Alrik Sundquist was born on March 1, 1941, to Elmer and Katherine Laverne (Hoeven) Sundquist in Primghar, Iowa. He graduated from Primghar High School with the class of 1959. Following high school, he attended Iowa State University and graduated with a civil engineering degree in 1963.
On September 17, 1966, Stephen was united in marriage to Bethany Boldt in Fremont, Nebraska. The ceremony was officiated by Beth’s father, Rev. Frederick Boldt. Following their marriage, Steve and Beth settled in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Steve worked for McKeown Engineering in Council Bluffs. The couple moved to Denison and he worked at one of McKeown’s satellite offices on Broadway. He started his own business, Sundquist Engineering PC in 1990. He served as president of the company and retired in 2017.
Prior to retirement, Steve and Beth enjoyed traveling and were able to take many memorable trips to Hawaii, Florida, the Black Hills and to numerous national parks. The couple also enjoyed spending time at their cottage on Spirit Lake and Okoboji. They loved to go boating, swimming, water skiing and just relaxing in the solitude of the lake environment. He was an avid Iowa State Cyclone football fan and attended many games.
Steve passed away on June 11, 2022, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital at the age of 81 years, three months and 18 days.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Beth Sundquist on June 21, 2019; and brother-in-law, Paul “Gus” Geuther.
He is survived by his daughter, Kimberlee and her husband, John Henningsen of St. Louis Park, Minnesota; son, Kyle Sundquist of Denison; grandchildren: Owen Henningsen and his wife, Kelsi of Bloomington, Minnesota, Kallen Henningsen of Champlin, Minnesota
and Bailey Henningsen of St. Louis Park, Minnesota; two great-granddaughters: Belle and Cora; sister, JoAnn Geuther of Mesa, Arizona; several nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends.
Visitation was held 5:00 – 7:00 PM, Thursday, June 16, 2022, at Huebner Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa. Private Graveside Services were held at Lakeview Gardens Cemetery in Spirit Lake, Iowa. Recorded musical selections included “Lord, You Have Come to the Lakeshore” by Collin & Mark Nelson and “Raining in My Heart” by Buddy Holly. Serving as honorary pallbearers were Kyle Sundquist, Owen Henningsen, Kallen Henningsen, Bailey Henningsen, Belle Henningsen, Cora Henningsen and John Henningsen. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.
