West Sioux pulls away from Wolverines
It appeared that a close, high scoring War Eagle Conference baseball game was in the offing after a first inning in which both South O’Brien and West Sioux scored three times. Unfortunately for the Wolverines, their scoring dried up while the runs kept coming for West Sioux. The Falcons wound up beating South O’Brien 14-4 in five innings June 6 at Hawarden.
After that first inning West Sioux went on to score four runs in the second, two in both the third and fourth innings and three in the fifth. The Wolverines got a run in the third.
South O’Brien scored all four of its runs without the benefit of a hit. In the first inning Boston Riedemann walked, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. Pete Bottjen then earned a walk. A wild pitch allowed Riedemann to score and Bottjen to go to second. Dain Moermond also drew a walk. Bottjen proceeded to steal third and an errant throw by the catcher allowed him to come home with Moermond moving to second. Another wild pitch while Brock Riedemann was in the process of being walked moved Moermond to third. Moermond then scored the final run of the inning on Mitch Enger’s groundout to second.
Bottjen led off the third inning and was hit by a pitch. He stole second and from there a pair of errors allowed him to score. Moermond walked and Brock Riedemann was hit by a pitch but both were thrown out on the bases.
A pair of Falcon pitchers combined to hold the visitors hitless. Wolverine starter Boston Riedemann went 1-2/3 innings and gave up seven runs, six of them earned, in the loss. He allowed two hits, walked five batters and hit three. Ben Woodall pitched 3-1/3 innings of relief. He yielded seven runs (four earned) on 10 hits while striking out three batters and hitting two.
