Wolverines drop War Eagle Conference baseball game to HMS
Four unearned runs helped Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn build a 7-0 lead over South O’Brien May 31 at Paullina. Despite some late scoring by the Wolverines, the deficit proved to be too large to overcome as HMS left town with an 11-4 War Eagle Conference victory.
The host team was a little too hospitable to its guests. South O’Brien committed nine errors and the pitching issued five walks and hit three Hawk batters.
Starter Dain Moermond gave up six runs (three earned) on four hits in his two innings of work. He walked three batters, struck out one and hit one. Trevor Fiddelke came on in relief and pitched 3-2/3 innings. He yielded four earned runs on four hits. He fanned four batters, walked two and hit two. The final 1-1/3 innings went to Ben Woodall who allowed one unearned run and one hit while striking out one batter.
The Wolverines cut into the deficit with a pair of runs in the fifth. Fiddelke walked and advanced on a passed ball. Cole Tjossem singled him to third and he scored on another passed ball. Tjossem stole second, moved up on a passed ball and came home when David Bottjen reached base on an error.
The score was 11-2 before South O’Brien scored two more runs in the seventh. Fiddelke drew another walk and got to second on a passed ball. He advanced to third on Tjossem’s fly ball to center. Walks to Camden Stevens and Bottjen loaded the bases. Boston Riedemann then drew a walk to force in Fiddelke. Stevens scored the Wolverines’ final run on an error.
There were only two hits for the home team. Brock Riedemann slugged a two-out double in the fourth inning but was left stranded.
