Willa Sickelka Beats Wayne Of Corydon’s Reese Brown To The Finish Line In The 100 Meter Dash Final At The State Track & Field Championships. Sickelka Finished Fourth And Brown Sixth.

Taja Conley Finished 14th In The State Track And Field Championships 400 Meter Hurdle Race For Class 1A.

South O’Brien’s track and field girls earned medals in five of their 10 events in Class 1A during the three day run of the State Track & Field Championships held May 19-21 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
Senior Willa Sickelka closed out her Wolverine track career Saturday with a fourth-place finish in the 100 meter final and a fifth place in the 200 meter final. On Thursday she had finished fourth in the 100 prelims and sixth in the 200 prelims.
Medals were awarded for places one through eight in all events.
A pair of medaling relays featured Sickelka on the anchor leg. The 4×200 of senior Abby Schreck, junior Karlee Warnke, junior Taja Conley and Sickelka finished fourth in Friday’s final. The 4×100 team was made up of Schreck, Warnke, senior Kenna Bauer and Sickelka. That unit placed eighth in Fridays prelims, just qualifying for Saturday’s finals, where they finished sixth.
The final medal winner for South O’Brien was one of the first to compete. The 1A shot put competition began at 9:00 a.m. Thursday. Junior Maddie Johnson placed eighth.
Five other events had earned their way to the blue oval of Drake Stadium. Taja Conley finished 14th in Friday’s 400 meter hurdle competition. The shuttle hurdle relay team of Schreck, senior Riley Draper, sophomore Marissa Ebel and Bauer shared the early morning Thursday stage with Johnson and placed 20th overall. Also placing 20th overall was the 4×400 relay group of junior Takara Conley, Bauer, freshman Regan Draper and Taja Conley which ran Friday.
The distance medley relay event was the first event on Friday. There the team of Bauer, Warnke Taja Conley and Takara Conley finished 21st. Takara Conley ran in Saturday’s 1500 meter final where she placed 24th.
South O’Brien scored 18 team points to finish 15th. The top three teams were Nashua-Plainfield with 59 points, Madrid with 54 and Riverside, Oakland with 54.
