The Wolverine Track And Field Girls Pose With The State Qualifier Pennant Banner With Which They Were Presented After Winning The Team Competition In Friday’s State Qualifying Meet At Lawton.

It was a successful day all over again for South O’Brien’s track and field girls at the Class 1A State Qualifying Meet held May 13 at Lawton. For the second straight year the Wolverines will send 10 events to the State Track and Field Meet which runs May 19-21 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
A win at Lawton meant a guaranteed trip to State and that was the case for South O’Brien in five events. Willa Sickelka captured both the 100 and 200 meter dashes and anchored the 4×200 relay to victory. Her teammates on that relay were Abby Schreck, Karlee Warnke and Taja Conley. The other two winners Friday were Maddie Johnson in the shot put and Takara Conley in the 1500 meter run.
Another five events qualified for state based on their Qualifying Meet times. Taja Conley is state-bound despite a runner-up finish in the 1500 meters. The four relays that ran fast enough to earn a trip to Des Moines were the second-place 4×100 relay of Schreck, Warnke, Kenna Bauer and Sickelka, the runner-up 4×400 relay of Takara Conley, Bauer, Regan Draper and Taja Conley, the second-place distance medley relay of Bauer, Warnke, Taja Conley and Takara Conley and the third-place shuttle hurdle relay of Schreck, Riley Draper, Ebel and Bauer.
There were other high finishes for the Wolverines at Lawton. Placing third were Warnke in the long jump and Grace Fuhrman in the discus. The high jump saw Alyssa VanBeek place fourth and Regan Draper sixth. Draper also finished sixth in the 400 meters. Annika Jenness came in fifth in the 100 and sixth in the 200. Mariella Smith ran to a fifth-place finish in the 800 meters. The 4×800 relay was fourth, courtesy of Averie Logan, Elodie Wilson, Smith and Jadyn Renken.
South O’Brien finished on top of the team standings at the Qualifying Meet, scoring 133 points. Gehlen Catholic was second with a 110 total.
