Wolverine girls gain a split in home triangular
The South O’Brien Girls Golf Team wrapped up regular season play with a triangular with MMCRU and Remsen St. Mary’s on Thursday, May 5 at the Primghar Golf Course.
In the dual against MMCRU, the Wolverines won 226-248. South O’Brien was fortunate to take three of the four medals. Junior Samantha Wilbur earned medalist honors with a 43 and Junior Whitney Einck was runner-up with a 56. Wilbur’s 48.3 average puts her 4th among WEC golfers. Einck is a serious golfer as well who continues to lead the team. The two are sure to make a statement at the Conference Meet and during post-season play next week.
MMCRU’s Avery Schlenger shot a 58 for 3rd. South O’Brien’s Jinger Nieuwenhuis, a sophomore, and Cassie Weiler from MMCRU tied at 60. Nieuwenhuis took the 4th place medal after a handicap hole playoff. It was great to see Nieuwenhuis hit a personal best and contribute to our team’s win tonight. Other Wolverine cards included freshman Addison Brueggeman with a 67 and sophomore Chloe Gergen with a 75. Brueggeman and Gergen have great attitudes and continue to learn the game.
The Wolverines dropped the other dual to St. Mary’s, losing 226-210. However, Samantha Wilbur’s 43 earned medalist honors in the dual. It was the only medal the Wolverines would get from the tough RSM team. Runner-up went to Sidney Tritz with a 47. Isabella Arens earned 3rd with a 50. Maci Gravenish from RSM and Whitney Einck from SO’ tied with a 56, but Gravenish took the 4th place medal after a handicap hole playoff.
It’s been a grueling season for golf in terms of weather this year with the below-average temps and awful winds. However, the weather cooperated a bit more for this last meet, and the forecast looks even better for Tuesday’s War Eagle Conference Meet at The Ridge in Sioux Center. Then, the Wolverines will be back in Primghar Friday, May 13 to host the Regional Meet which begins at 10:00 a.m.
