The South O’Brien FFA had teams compete in the NW District contest in Pocahontas

The Meats contest consisted of identifying ten cuts of meat, placing a class of hams and porterhouse steaks, quality and yield grading three beef carcasses, and completing a ground beef formulation problem. South O’Brien had the Champion and Reserve Champion Meats Teams. Champion individual was Hudson Oolman, Reserve Champion Leo Sells, 3rd Grant Wagner, 4th Dain Moermond, 6th Payton Farquhar, 7th Claire Wagner, with Abby Stout and Josie Brown also competing.
The Ag Mechanics team of Billy Lange, Nate Rohlfsen, Teagen Bahrenfuss and Reese Lundquist placed 12th. During the contest, team members rotated to different areas that covered the topics of: rafter layout, skid loaders, wire welding, electrical wiring and land measurement. Billy commented that, “There were some areas that we haven’t covered in class yet, but overall it was a good learning experience. Now we kind of know what will take place at the state contest.”
Dain Moermond represented the chapter in the Floriculture and Nursery/Landscape events. These events included identifying 35 floral plants, 39 landscape plants, completing a written exam in both areas, and putting together a St. Patrick’s Day floral order. Dain said, “I haven’t taken any of the ag classes that cover this material, but it was fun to give them a try. I think I did pretty well for the first time.”
