Calumet Firemans Pancake Day – On St. Patrick’s Day. Tues., March 17th the Calumet Fire Department will hold a Pancake & Sausage Day at the Fire Station. Serving times will be from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and again from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Everyone’s welcome!
ST. PATRICKS DAY EXTRAVAGANZA – A Bake Sale and Soup Dinner & Supper will be held Sat., March 14 at the Methodist Church in Sutherland. Baked goods will go on sale beginning at 10:30 a.m. The dinner will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the supper from. 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Cost for the meal is $2.50/aduIts; $1.50/undcr 12; and Free/pre-schoolers. Sutherland Church Of Christ Celebrates 100th Birthday – “Sweeter as the years go by” is definitely the theme song being sung at the Sutherland Church of Christ this year as they celebrate the 100th birthday of the first church in Sutherland. A number of activities and events have been planned to celebrate this occasion all year long. Let’s take a walk down memory lane and find the roots of this present gathering of people. Many of the following facts were taken from the Sutherland Courier, June 9, 1938. In the early 1870’s a group of people met in the Erie schoolhouse (2 miles south and 2 miles west of present Calumet) seeking to form a local fellowship of Christians patterned after the teachings of the New Testament scripture. Not desiring to create another division in Christendom, but to promote the unity of the body in response to Christ’s own prayer. Their plea was, and still is, “in essentials, unity; in opinion, liberty; and in all things, love.” Elder H.E. Higbee, a local farmer, did the preaching for the congregation.
Tigers Final Basketball Stats – The S.H.S. Tigers ended a successful basketball campaign with a 12-7 overall record an d 10-4 in the tough Sioux Valley Conference good for 3rd place behind defending state champion Paullina an d the Aurelia Bulldogs. T h e Tigers average d 66.7 on offense scoring 1267 points while giving u p 1215 points for a 63.9 defensive average. The Tigers had excellent team shooting percentages as the y hit 47 per cent from the field on 512 of 1086 shots, and 70 percent from the line on 243 out of 347 attempts.
Shower to Honor LuAnn Abrahamson – A community bridal shower will be held in honor of LuAnn Abrahamson of Sutherland, bride-elect of Kevin Puhrmann of Paullina, on Saturday. March 20. LuAnn and Kevin will be united in marriage on April 17. The shower will b e held at 2:00 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Paullina.
Mrs. Ducommun’s Granddaughter in Honor Society – Lisa Ducommun a junior a t Washington High School in Cherokee, was tapped for the National Honor Society. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Ducommun of Larrabee. Her grandmother is Daisy Ducommun of Sutherland.
50 years ago – 1972
Welcome Lady Calls At Rohweder Home – Mrs. Herbert Collier called at the Jack Rohweder home. Mr. and Mrs. Rohweder have purchased the Marvin Sump house, in Sutherland. They have moved here from a farm near Peterson. At one time they lived on the farm known as the Bill Sweeney place east of town, but are now retired. There are two sons, Larry, who is married and lives in Cherokee; and Kirby, married and living in Spencer. The church preference of the family is Bethel Lutheran, Sutherland. The community welcomes Mr. and Mrs. Rohweder.
Town Council Hires New Night Policeman – At the regular meeting of the Sutherland Town Council Monday night, March 6 Darrel Watterson was hired as night policeman. He began his duties Monday night.
Junior Class Play To Be Held March 14 – The junior class will be presenting “Off The Track” on Tuesday, March 14, at 7:30 p.m. in the Sutherland High School Auditorium.
“Off The Track” is a comedy which takes place in a railroad depot after a train wreck. The people meeting in the train., depot after the train wreck include an Italian lady, 3 college girls, a rich lady, college boy, old lady, young-engaged , couple, and a station manager.
The play cast is made up of Jenny Austin, Barton Byrant, Virginia Clark, Eva Jean Draper, Sandy Nielsen, Dave Orthmann, Mark Rehder, Teresa Sholly, Mary Sickelka, Mary Van Overbeke, Lyle Virgil, Gary Warren, and Mary Zahren.
The play is directed by Miss Petersen and the two student directors, Julie Saienga and Ed Johannsen.
