HMS excels early and late to top Wolverine girls
South O’Brien battled Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn evenly over the second and third quarters of their game played February 8 at Hartley. Unfortunately for the Wolverines, the first and last quarters belonged to HMS and the Hawks came out on top 49-33 in the War Eagle Conference matchup. South O’Brien wound up tied for eighth in the conference with a record of 2-8.
“When we were battling we moved the ball well and got some open looks that allowed us to score,” noted Wolverine head coach Erica Dreckman. “The thing that determined the game was our shooting and turnovers. We missed some key opportunities to score.”
South O’Brien went just 10-for-41 from the floor to shoot 24 percent. The visitors turned the ball over 21 times against the pressing Hawks. From three-point range the Wolverines were 4-of-22 and they made nine of 11 free throw tries. HMS shot 31 percent with 19 baskets in 62 attempts. The Hawks were 3-of-10 from long distance and 8-of-14 at the charity stripe.
Abby Schreck tallied 11 points, Alyssa Van Beek seven, Tatiana Conley six, Taja Conley five and Takara Conley four. Draper finished with five assists, Schreck two and Takara Conley one.
Van Beek and Schreck claimed six rebounds apiece while Draper and Takara Conley each brought down five. Both Schreck and Tatiana Conley came away with two steals as HMS committed 14 turnovers.
