HMS makes things difficult for Wolverine boys
A stout defense and execution on offense allowed Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn to come away with a 52-41 win over South O’Brien January 18 at Paullina. HMS took the lead for good midway through the first quarter. The Wolverines could draw no closer than seven points in the second half.
“We only shot 33 percent from the floor which is not good enough to win,” commented South O’Brien head coach Kiley Yates. “HMS played good defense and limited us. I thought HMS ran good offense versus our zone and took and made good shots. We need to continue to improve our shooting to reach our potential.”
The Wolverines made 15 baskets in 46 attempts. Meanwhile, HMS was 19-of-40 from the floor for 48 percent. The Hawks hit four of 12 three-point attempts and 10 of 19 charity tosses. South O’Brien was sharp at the free throw line, going 10-for-12, but was only 1-of-7 from beyond the arc.
Scoring for the Wolverines showed Jake Wallin with 13 points, Hudson Oolman with 10, Sawyer Honkomp with six, Jacob Van Lith and David Bottjen each with four and Boston Riedemann and Pete Bottjen with two apiece. Wallin also contributed two assists. Leading scorers for HMS were Lance Berends with 19 points and Kooper Ebel with 15.
On the boards, Van Lith came down with nine rebounds and Oolman eight. Honkomp, Van Lith and Wallin each notched a steal. The Hawks were guilty of eight turnovers. South O’Brien turned the ball over only two times.
